Colors Infant Storytime

Colors Infant Storytime (9/13/2021)

I was so excited for this storytime, mostly because it was our first in-person infant storytime since before COVID! This was such a fun one, and so easy to customize to your group of kids.

We began by practicing "good morning" in ASL. We then used these signs in our opening song.

Opening Song:

Good morning to you, good morning to you
We're all in our places with sunshiney faces
Good morning to you, good morning to you.

After our opening song, we practiced "color" in ASL.

Story & Flannel:

I chose to read "Crayon's Book of Colors" as our first book so that I could place our crayon cut-outs for each color onto the flannel board as I read. This way, throughout the rest of storytime, whenever we spoke about a color, I was able to point to the corresponding crayon.

Color Song:

(Tune of "If You're Happy and You Know It")
If you are wearing red, pat your head (x2)
If you are wearing red, it's time to pat your head
If you are wearing red, pat your head
(blue, touch your shoe; yellow, clap your hands; etc.)

Lap Bounce:

I bounce you here, I bounce you there
I bounce you, bounce you everywhere
I tickle you here, I tickle you there
I tickle you, tickle you everywhere
I hug you here, I hug you there
I hug you, hug you everywhere

Story:

We read "Lionel & Molly: Colors" next. This is a nice touch-and-feel book, however it's not the BEST book for teaching colors, as it can cause a lot of confusion. For example, the page about the "big yellow sun" has an orange background. To help ease confusion, I focused the kids more on the crayons I was pointing to, rather than the pictures in the book.

Egg Shaker Song:

(Tune of "The Wheels on the Bus")
This little egg goes shake, shake, shake
Shake, shake, shake
Shake, shake, shake
This little egg goes shake, shake, shake
All morning long

Lap Bounce:

(Tune of "Did You Ever See A Lassie?")
Sway baby in your lap on "This way, and that way"
Did you ever see a baby, a baby, a baby?
Did you ever see a baby go this way and that?
Go this way and that way, and that way and this way
Did you ever see a baby go this way and that?

Final Book:

Before reading this one, we practiced "cat" in ASL.
"Cat's Colors" was a great book for teaching colors as the illustrations start out gray and one color is added at a time. This way, kids can focus on each color individually and it avoids some confusion. Also, (SPOILER) there are adorable rainbow kittens at the end. <3

Closing Song:

We wave goodbye like this, we wave goodbye like this
We clap our hands for all our friends
We wave goodbye like this
